The Key to a Dynasty

Celtics owner Walter A. Brown and All-Star Bill Sharman greeted the team’s newest player, University of San Francisco star Bill Russell, and his newlywed wife Rose (the pair were just married the week before) with a giant key to the city of Boston. Russell led the Celtics to NBA World Championship titles in 11 of his 13 seasons. The key was too large even for the nearly 7-foot-tall Russell, so he gave it to the photographer who kept it in storage until it was auctioned in 2007. It now hangs proudly at a bar in Maine for all Celtics fans to see.
