One Piece of Parquet
Date: 1940s to 1990s
The world’s most famous basketball floor was instantly recognizable around the world, but why was it the way it was? Like many things, the Celtics parquet court was a happy accident born of necessity. Celtics owner Walter Brown wanted a new floor for his team, but wood was in short supply after World War II. Brown contracted with the East Boston Lumber Company to construct a floor using scrap wood, which ended up with an alternating parquet pattern. The rest is NBA history.
