Welcome to FleetCenter
Date: 1995-96 season
The Celtics christened their new home on November 3, 1995, with a heartbreaking 101-100 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. The FleetCenter was originally named Shawmut Center after the Boston-based bank bought the rights, outbidding the regional Fleet National Bank. Things took a turn in the spring of 1995 when Fleet merged with Shawmut, giving the arena the FleetCenter moniker just before opening. Every seat had to be restamped with the new arena name and the arena’s blue Shawmut colors were replaced with Fleet’s green – which suited the Celtics just fine. Today, Boston’s home arena is known as TD Garden.
