The Red Auerbach Playbook
Date: 1950s to 1960s
Red Auerbach famously had only seven plays to run against the opposition. Once, after Bill Sharman noticed that teams had picked up on the plays, Auerbach tried to change the numbers around. The next game was chaos. Sharman later wrote, “Cousy calls ‘Two!’ and half the guys are running our old two play which is now the three play and half the guys are running our old one, which has now become two. We look[ed] like [the] Keystone Kops out there.”
