Sweatin’ It Out With Bird
While no one would ever accuse Larry Bird of being a speedster on the court, apparently Larry Legend loved to run and even participated in some road races. The ultra-competitive Bird ran with teammate Scott Wedman in the five-mile Shamrock Classic, which was held in between games during the 1984-85 season. Initially Bird and Wedman just enjoyed the run, but Bird got tired of the runners passing them and saying, “Hey, I’m passing Larry Bird!” Bird remembered that there were “Kids 10 years old flying by you at the four-mile marker.” Wedman then recalled, “So the last mile, Larry’s noticing this and he says, ‘Nobody’s passing me anymore. Let’s go.’ And he took off. He did the last mile in under five minutes. It was a sprint.” Said Bird dryly, “I beat Scotty, so that was good.” It’s unclear if Bird wore this sweatshirt during his runs, but it’s a good bet!
