Red’s Choice: Hoyo de Monterrey

The cigar brand of choice for Red Auerbach was Hoyo de Monterrey. Fans and coaches of opposing teams fumed when Auerbach, assured of another Celtics win, lit up a Monterrey. The Cincinnati Royals once gave out 5,000 cigars to fans before a game against the Celtics. As Auerbach remembered, “We beat the hell out of them, so they didn’t get to light those cigars.”
