Red on the Court

Red Auerbach was only 32 years old when team owner Walter Brown handed him the role of head coach of the Boston Celtics. Shown here with one of his early teams, Auerbach would step in during practice and play in scrimmages against his own players. One of his stars of the 1960s, John Havlicek, remembered, “People would foul him and block his shots – and he’d foul the hell out of them at the other end.”
