Humble Walter Brown
Date: 1950s to 1960s
Walter Brown started the Celtics from scratch and oversaw seven NBA World Championship titles during his time as owner. Boston Globe sportswriter Jack Barry called Brown “a figure who daily consorted with kings of the sporting business and professional world and whose charity was second to none, possessed that cherished gift of all truly great men…humility.” In 1964, following his untimely death at age 59 from a heart attack, the league named the NBA Finals trophy after him, known as the Walter A. Brown Trophy.
