Hondo’s Off-Court Activities

John Havlicek was one of the greatest basketball players of all-time, but he was also an avid golfer. Faultless Rubber Company of Ashland, Ohio – not far from his hometown of Martin’s Ferry – made this signature golf bag for him. Golfing partner and fellow Buckeye Jack Nicklaus said, “John loved the outdoors, loved to fish, and frequently when he played golf…he carried a fishing pole in his bag.” One golf pro said, “when play was slow, he would always cast a hook in the water.” Another golfing friend remembered Havlicek hosted a golf tournament that played 18 holes followed by two hours of fishing. “Whatever amount of fish you caught, you took off your net score and that was the winner,” the friend said.
