Hondo Goes Out
Date: 1977-78 season
No one could reasonably expect a team to win forever. Age and injuries finally caught up to the Celtics in the 1977-78 campaign as Jo Jo White, Charlie Scott and Curtis Rowe each missed more than 30 games. The Celtics fell out of playoff contention early, which cost longtime coach Tommy Heinsohn his job. But the one member of the Celtics to play all 82 games was ageless wonder John Havlicek, who announced it would be his last season with the team. Despite the unusual feeling of losing that season, Havlicek said, “The career I’ve had has been one of happiness. Everything a player could accomplish, I’ve done.” Click the PDF to see how that season’s yearbook documented Havlicek and other Celtics players and coaches.
