Most NBA players get a brief pregame or halftime presentation when they retire. That would not do for Larry Bird. Perhaps fittingly scheduled between home games against the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers, the Celtics and 14,000-plus fans in Boston Garden paid tribute to Larry Legend. Bob Costas emceed the event attended by a hoard of Celtics stars, Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr – whose legacy Bird said was an inspiration – and Bird’s friend and rival Magic Johnson. The proceedings ended as Bird and his family raised the Celtics retired number banner with his No. 33 affixed.
