Drafting Jo Jo
Date: May to June 1976
Jo Jo White arrived in Boston with a gold medal from the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, and a commitment to serve in the Marine Reserves. That military commitment scared some teams away from drafting White, but the Celtics selected him ninth overall in the 1969 NBA Draft. The team’s faith in White paid off when the Marines granted him an early release, and White would go on to lead the Celtics to two NBA World Championship titles in 1974 and 1976. Here, he guards former teammate Paul Westphal, who was a member of the Phoenix Suns during the 1976 NBA Finals.
