Dedicated to the Green and White
Date: 1950s to 1960s
Celtics fans have always held up Tommy Heinsohn as a franchise legend. Whether as a player, coach or broadcaster, “Mr. Celtic” was, and still is, a fan favorite because of his dedication to the Boston Celtics. As a broadcaster, Heinsohn loved to highlight dedicated, hardworking players by awarding “Tommy Points” for hustle and spirit rather than numbers on a stat sheet. Coach Red Auerbach originally inspired the concept by shining a light on players who may not always get it. By 2003, Heinsohn gave away the “Tommy Award” for game contributions of overlooked players. “Any Celtic that ever played in a Celtic uniform always was thankful for a ‘Tommy Point,’” Tony Allen explained.
