Architectural Achievement
Date: ca. 1930s
Today’s fans remember Boston Garden as “old,” but it was a state-of-the-art arena when it opened in 1928. Contemporary articles described the construction as “of modern American Architecture, massive and simple in character with vertical lines carried throughout its 100-foot height.” The combined Garden/North Station building had seven arches forming an arcade, the bases of which were made of Vermont granite. Ed Sullivan, who was at the time a syndicated sports columnist, wrote, “The Boston Garden’s interior is the very last word in this sort of architecture and planning.”
