About Don “The Duck”
Date: 1970s
One of the most unsung players in Celtics history, Don “The Duck” Chaney showed off his defensive skills during the 1970s. A winner of two NBA World Championship titles, Chaney can claim the title as the only player to suit up next to both Bill Russell and Larry Bird. He said of his rookie season: “I can still remember coming to the Celtics, being in awe of all the guys who were your idols that you saw on TV all the time.” The fans appreciated Chaney’s efforts – from his “Duck Freaks” cheering section to the life-sized trophy he received from Celtics fans after he signed to play in the American Basketball Association.
