A Celtics Jersey Fit for a King
Date: 1988
In October 1988, the Celtics participated in the second annual McDonald’s Basketball Open in Madrid. One local coach told Jack McCallum of Sports Illustrated, “The Boston Celtics did for basketball in the 1960s what the Beatles did for music…they changed the way to imagine the game.” On their trip to Spain, the team gifted Prince Felipe, the heir to the throne who became king in 2014, this jersey with his family name “Borbon” on the back.
