A Haul of Hall-of-Famers
Talk about a Hall-of-Fame hat! More than a dozen Celtics legends, including Larry Bird, Bob Cousy, Bill Russell and Red Auerbach, put their signatures on a classic Celtics cap. With so many Hall-of-Famers, All-Stars and basketball icons in franchise history, we’re surprised it had enough room for all that star power.
A Real Hall-of-Fame Jacket
When Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Famers are inducted at Springfield, they receive an orange jacket to symbolize their achievement. For Celtics fans, this off-the-rack jacket with its original tags might be more valuable. Ten members of the Hall of Fame signed the jacket along with seven more Celtics favorites from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.
Back to the Finals in ’63
The Celtics celebrated with Coach Red Auerbach after defeating the Cincinnati Royals, 142-131, in Game 7 of the 1963 Eastern Division Finals. Bob Cousy, who would retire at the end of the season, tallied 16 assists, but it was Sam Jones who stole the show. Journalist Leonard Koppett wrote that Jones was “hitting jump shots […]
Boston’s Team of the Century
No NBA team has quite the storied history as the Celtics, as the signatures by these basketball legends attest. The 17-time NBA World Champions boast 49 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Famers, many of whom signed this ball, including Larry Bird, Bob Cousy and John Havlicek.
Cooz Leads the C’s in ’59

Cousy Scores for 15,000

Hats Off to Fan Favorites
Everyone roots for superstars like Pierce, Bird, Havlicek and Russell. Yet there’s a soft spot in Celtics fans’ hearts for players who aren’t superstars but play hard and connect with fans. Brian Scalabrine and Jim Loscutoff were some examples, as was Tacko Fall. At 7-foot-5, Fall was the tallest player in the NBA when he […]
Heads Above the Rest
Instead of a team photo, the Celtics opted for floating heads on the team’s 1957-58 yearbook cover. Inside, the yearbook was becoming less a media guide and more a fan publication with fun facts and sketches of the Celtics players and front office. The publication featured a minute-by-minute breakdown of the thrilling double-overtime win over […]
Red and the Team in ’61-’62
The Celtics dynasty was in full swing after the C’s won their third straight NBA World Championship title in 1961. The starting five of Sam Jones, Frank Ramsey, Bob Cousy, Tommy Heinsohn and Bill Russell, along with stars off the bench like K.C. Jones, Satch Sanders, Jim Loscutoff and Gary Phillips, helped lead the team […]
Red the Joker
(Left to right) Red Auerbach, Frank Ramsey, Jim Loscutoff, Bill Russell, Tommy Heinsohn and Bob Cousy shared a laugh during a practice. Auerbach had a reputation as a practical joker, once giving Heinsohn a fake cigar that exploded when Heinsohn took a puff. Heinsohn eventually got his revenge on his cigar-chomping coach, saying, “it took […]
